A highly variable species with many varieties differing in habit and flower colour. Produces a profusion of tubular flowers, the colour of which ranges from white to red and yellow. The flowers are often spotted inside. Ideal for dry, hot spots in the garden. Best grown in well drained soil in a sunny position. Prefers heavier soils, but will grow in sandy soils. Tolerates frost and extended dry periods. Prune after flowering to maintain compact growth. Cultivate soil before planting. Dig hole twice the width of the container. Remove plant from container and place into the hole so the soil level is the same as the surrounding ground. Fill hole firmly and water in well even if the soil is moist.
